Appiah Annan

Appiah was born and raised in Ghana. He is a Sidney Myer Creative fellow and internationally recognised dancer, choreographer and musician who won Ghana’s national dance championship at age 16. His dance practices include traditional and ritualistic African, contemporary, freestyle, hip-hop and acrobatic styles. He started Asanti in Africa in 2003 before bringing it to Australia with him in 2007. Asanti has toured regionally, nationally and internationally and raises funds for its non-profit organisation ‘Nkabom’, Centre for the Arts, Creation, Innovation and Community Cultural Development in Ghana.

Wominjeka (Welcome). We acknowledge the Yaluk-ut Weelam as the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet. Yaluk-ut Weelam means ‘people of the river camp’ and is connected with the coastal land at the head of Port Phillip Bay, extending from the Werribee River to Mordialloc. The Yaluk-ut Weelam are part of the Boon Wurrung, one of the five major language groups of the greater Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to the land, their ancestors and their elders—past, present and to the future.
