Gerhana Waty

Hansen Partnership

Having lived in Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam, Gerhana has travelled the world studying how cities can deliberately be designed to be exclusive. Having spent 20 years in Melbourne without a driving license, Gerhana channels her urban design expertise in championing streets for people. In 2019, Gerhana led the award-winning City of Darebin Streets for People project- shifting the lens through which streets and public realms are perceived as people oriented spaces. Through her practice, Gerhana continues to work with other Local Governments (locally and internationally) towards an equitable urban environment for humans and non-human. Gerhana is also involved in teaching at universities and a committee member of the Urban Design Forum, instilling the value of designing for all established and emerging designers.

Wominjeka (Welcome). We acknowledge the Yaluk-ut Weelam as the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet. Yaluk-ut Weelam means ‘people of the river camp’ and is connected with the coastal land at the head of Port Phillip Bay, extending from the Werribee River to Mordialloc. The Yaluk-ut Weelam are part of the Boon Wurrung, one of the five major language groups of the greater Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to the land, their ancestors and their elders—past, present and to the future.
