Maxine Tuyau

Maxine Tuyau is a writer and podcaster. As someone whose life has been shaped and determined by the intersections of beauty and race, Maxine knows that dissecting and understanding the politics of beauty is far from a frivolous pursuit. Maxine has had writing published in the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and ABC Online. Here, and in her podcast, she explores how beauty is defined – and by whom. Through this process Maxine tries to discover how this affects who we are, where we belong, and who and where we are allowed to be.

Wominjeka (Welcome). We acknowledge the Yaluk-ut Weelam as the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet. Yaluk-ut Weelam means ‘people of the river camp’ and is connected with the coastal land at the head of Port Phillip Bay, extending from the Werribee River to Mordialloc. The Yaluk-ut Weelam are part of the Boon Wurrung, one of the five major language groups of the greater Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to the land, their ancestors and their elders—past, present and to the future.
